Blown-up Biology

Blown-up Biology is very different from its sister-show, Exploding Custard. This is a multimedia show combining projected images of live microscope specimens with use of photographic images, sound-effects and atmospheric music.

Blown-up Biology is suitable for all ages. It can be very successfully presented to young children, but is also suitable for more sophisticated audiences. It has been equally enjoyed by eight-year-old primnary school children and by the Association of German Biologists at their annual conference in Potsdam.

Its main theme is the concept and nature of the cell, with a variety of spectacular living examples shown through the microscope. Its emotional message is the concluding sentiment of Darwin's Origin of Species, that "there is grandeur in this view of life..."

This project was funded through the Royal Society and British Association Millennium Awards Scheme, financed by the Millennium Commission, to encourage people's understanding of science engineering and technology in the community.
