Exploding Custard®
The famous Exploding Custard show is a fast-moving, entertaining demonstration of do-it-yourself kitchen-table science. 'Performed' by Ian Russell for seventeen years, it has been presented more than a thousand times to audiences from Moscow to South Africa. The show includes dozens of simple but spectacular experiments, all using materials readily available at home. Children can volunteer to participate and there is plenty of laughter.
And yes, the Custard DOES explode...
The Exploding Custard experience is seriously thought-provoking for children and adults alike. Recurrent themes include combustion, liquids and gases, pressure, conservation of energy, the scientific process and how children are better at experimentation than most grown-ups! I want this to be a memorable learning experience, balancing explanation with inspiration. I see this as an important issue with curriculum pressures placing increased emphasis on knowledge and understanding. So the main aim of Exploding Custard is for children and grown-ups to go out empowered and inspired, feeling more confident in their abilities and buzzing with a lasting desire to observe, think, discuss and experiment. A good case can be made for kitchen-table science being REAL science. If so, children are better scientists than grown-ups. This is the child-empowering message of Exploding Custard.
