Services offered Interactive Science Ltd is Ian Russell: a person, not a glossy brochure. With over fifteen years of practical experience in interactive exhibition development, I am well known in the British "hands-on-exhibit-community" and close to the latest thinking in hands-on science and interactive exhibitions in general. Interactive exhibits Concept development, design and fabrication of every conceivable kind of interactive exhibits, not just science-based ones. Troubleshooting Identifying cost-effective "fixes" for existing interactives that are failing for any reason. Team-working Working closely alongside your own exhibition team. (They say I am easy to work with!) Exhibit design briefs Also functional performance specifications for tender documents and project-management quality control. Concept development Leading brainstorming sessions, clarifying the vision, achieving team-consensus, establishing a workable, unique identity for each major new project, and producing written reports. Made-to-measure interpretive strategies There's more to "interactivity" than just hands-on exhibits. Torrents of highly practical, cost-effective, innovative ideas, flowing from the first brainstorming session to the final written report. Emotion management The most commonly overlooked aspect of exhibition design, building on sensitivity to what visitors are feeling. Popular science shows My famous Exploding Custard "hobby" keeps me exceptionally well-tuned to the minds of school groups and family audiences! A selection of clients
Production capacity In autumn 2001, following a period of creative brainstorming by phone and email, I received an order for eleven interactives for a space-travel exhibition in the huge new science centre in Valencia, Spain: Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe, Ciutat de les Arts I les Ciencies. All the exhibits were designed, fabricated, and installed on site in just seven weeks, with total success, a delighted client and no maintenance problems afterwards. A less frantic timescale is obviously better for one's blood pressure, but this fast-track project did prove how efficiently a small outfit with a flexible, well-established network of associates and trusted contacts can operate. Minimising the risk of failure Experiences where non-overbearing explanation is correctly balanced with contextualised exploration are the most successful part of any exhibition. This is more easily said than achieved! As "interactivity" comes of age, there are now, sadly, hundreds of ineffective interactive exhibits on display. Breakages, inappropriate use and incomprehensibility are simply due to bad design or bad construction (or a bad concept!). Often, poor visitor-engagement results from an imbalanced excess of linear, "explanatory", schoolish experiences. How many of us have given an expensive present to an infant, only to see it tossed aside while they play with the box? However much is spent on evaluation studies, a bad idea is still a bad idea. Experience often enables me to save clients an immense amount of costly time by heading directly towards a better solution from the start. "Audience sensitivity" Applying this unusual breadth of experience to exhibition design and consultancy work, my instinctive 'audience sensitivity' enables me to bring added value to any visitor attraction, in terms of guaranteed popularity, a successfully understood message, accurate visitor-profile-targeting and the finely tuned balance between superficial simplicity and that subtle 'depth' essential to attract repeat-visits. Website My website www.interactives.co.uk includes many worked examples of my projects, publications and philosophy, hopefully conveying my sincere enthusiasm for effective, interactive communication Give
