Radioactive Waste Management in Europe (Click for larger image.) In 1993 I competed successfully to come up with a genuinely effective way of conveying some understanding of radioactive waste management to young people with a typically short attention span, by means of a travelling exhibition. Quite a challenge! The client was DG XII of the European Commission in Brussels. Completed in 1994, my solution was to produce a full-blown multimedia program rather resembling a video amusement arcade game. I set up six, seated, touchscreen units to run the programme, together with three additional screens each displaying a "Hall of Fame" with the names and scores of all that day's users. Despite the highly popular theming, and the animated neon light "attractor" at the centre, the subject was treated seriously, openly and unpatronisingly. (Click for larger image.) Associated with this were three freestanding hands-on exhibit panels for those people waiting for a seat at the screens. These enabled users to perform simple experiments relating to radiation in its broadest sense, incorporating three working geiger counters, as well as other interactive demonstrations of infrared, ultraviolet and visible light. Considering the nature of its subject matter, the tremendous popularity and effectiveness of this exhibition with people of all ages was remarkable.
