This exhibit explains the workings of a square gear transmission by way of an old fashioned hand drill. The animated gadgetry consists of a breast drill (fixed to the front glass panel) in which an old wood drill has been mounted. A motor with an attached gearbox drives the drill. The interactive exhibit allows the visitor to understand how a square gear transmission works. By turning a hand wheel, two wood drills are activated. One drill turns with the same revolution as the hand wheel, while the other drill turns at double the revolution as the hand wheel. The different revolutions are shown by a 7-segment LED display The original exhibit cost in the region of £10,800 (excluding
software). |
